Day 4…Kingman to Williams on the old Mother Road

Today we rode a really great section of 66, the longest original stretch that you can ride from what I understand. It really goes from Kingman to Seligman, but there is another ~40 miles after Seligman that is unmarked but that we were informed about by the proprietor of the Seligman Sundries store…

Anyway, it’s really a great ride..hardly any traffic, lots of old americana to see, and so much indescribable beauty of the landscape. Right around Peach Springs, which is a native american town, the landscape turns into huge vistas of lush fields surround by mountains and, yeah, it’s just hard to put into words what you feel as you travel through it.

Along the way, we stopped at an old gas station that had some old vehicles, pumps, etc. You couldn’t really get too close as it was fenced off, but we did get close enough for some pics. I tried to get a picture of the old pump there as well – near as I could see, the pump read 9.5 gallons, for around $1.02. That’s what, less than 11 cents per gallon – well before my memories 🙂

Anyway, we really had a nice time in Seligman. The Sundries shop was run by a Swiss woman who’d been a tour operator in the area, (as well as parts of Quebec!), and she was really inviting and gave us some pointers about the route to the Grand Canyon. The town is chock full of shops and kitschy stuff, really fun to see, though we didn’t check all of it out…

Then we got into Williams, which is yet another completely different place – it’s more of a mountain town..the air is cool, lots of evergreen trees, and just great clean air. We went for an early dinner/late lunch at the Canyon Canyon Brewery, and had some great food. I had a couple pints of a fine IPA and it nearly wiped me out though. We got back to the hotel and crashed for a couple hours before heading to the pool for a good soaking!

Tomorrow we’re off to the Grand Canyon, and then onto Winslow, AZ (to stand on the corner 😉 )

Peace,

Byron

p.s. – with the impending weather, and our lack of appropriate rain gear, we may have to take a detour. NM and Northern Texas/Oklahoma are getting hit by hurricanes apparently, so we may need to detour up to Colorado/Kansas, etc, but we’ll figure all that out in the next day or two 🙂
