Day 5 & 6. Williams, Grand Canyon, Winslow and the Painted Desert.

One cannot always count on having useable wi-fi in hotels, a day in the Grand Canyon, combined with a few hours riding all adds up to missing a days’ posting. Oh well, it’s my blog, and nobody seems to be making any demands on my writing and photography skills, so there đŸ™‚

Anyway, we started out yesterday morning from Williams, AZ pretty early, and made our way up to the Grand Canyon. After parking we met up with some other bikers from Sault St. Marie or all places! They were actually the first people we’ve met in our travels that were from North America, let alone Canada! So we traded some travel stories with them for awhile in the parking lot, and then made out way to the shuttle bus that took us to the main South observation point.

Upon seeing the Canyon, you really have to wonder what the hell happened there. I believe I’ve read that geologists now think that there was a large inland sea that catastrophically emptied down the general direction of the canyon, and created it in a relatively short amount of time. That is far more believable to me, compared to the theory we were taught as kids, that the Colorado River alone carved it out over millions of years. It’s just the scale of this thing that is just amazing, and you really have to see it.

We hung around the canyon for a while and then went down the other side of the park towards Flagstaff and then onto Winslow. One thing I need to inform anyone thinking about touring on a beast like this Harley – know exactly where you’re going, and whether it has a way to easily turn around. A fully loaded electra glide, with two people and luggage, weighs well over 1000 lbs, and it isn’t just a la-de-da affair to do a three point turn…just sayin’ đŸ™‚

So, yeah, we made it into Winslow and went for a nice meal. When we came back to the hotel we went outside for a smoke and spoke with a guy from Oklahoma named Scott. He was a very nice guy and I had a long conversation with him about the state of America, where it’s going, what’s gone wrong, etc. I even gave him the outline of a theory I have kinda developed in my mind about what it means to be an American, especially when you compare it to being a Canadian (but that’s a conversation to have over a pint or something).

Yeah, it’s been another couple great days here in the American Southwest, though I seem to have developed a nagging knot in the middle of my back from my poor biker’s posture – I think I will be visiting a Spa on my birthday for a full massage! đŸ™‚

Ciao for now,

B
