Route 66, or the Mother Road, is a fairly famous American highway that was built in the mid 1920’s, and was one of the first of the US highway system. There is a fairly long Wikipedia post about it here. It has been rebuilt and re-aligned many times over the years, and since the adoption of the Interstate system in the late 50’s, it has, unfortunately, disappeared to a large extent. We will be trying to ride as much of the original road as we can during this trip, and avoid the Interstates as much as possible; if there’s one thing I know about road trips in the US, it’s that to see the real country, stay off of the interstates. That way, you get to see all these small towns, and see the way people there really live. I find it far more interesting, because it’s the trip that’s the thing, not the destination!
Anyway, below I have included some maps that we will be trying to stick to, for the most part. We have fifteen days to cover ~2300 miles 🙂
