Going to bring some…film!

Yes, film! I still have several film cameras and equipment to use with them. My best camera is an oldie – a Zenza Bronica ETR from the 70’s. It’s a Japanese-made medium format camera, which means it takes negatives (or slides) that are 4.5cmx6cm, so they are quite a bit larger than those using 35mm film (or a DSLR).

Yes, I know you’re saying “Film, why would you use film when digital is so convenient and is just as good? Can you even get film anymore?”

To this I answer that yes, you can still buy film though it’s certainly not as ubiquitous as it was. Downtown Camera is one of the few places in T.O. that carries medium format film. I also would argue that while digital is certainly more convenient (and much cheaper), film quality is still better than digital, it has a pleasing graininess to it, and I guess I am just enjoy anachronism in the end. There are other advantages to film that I won’t go into, but one of the big ones is that you can shoot medium format pictures without spending a fortune on equipment. A medium format digital camera is likely to cost over $10k (likely closer to $20k, or even $30k), while you could pick up a complete camera kit (body, lenses and accessories) similar to mine, for less than $500.

Anyway, once I get back and have developed the film, I will try to scan some of the best pix and post them up here. I am planning to re-purchase developing tanks (and perhaps even an enlarger), which we unfortunately got rid of a few years ago, to develop the film myself. It should be just another adventure 🙂
